Actor Eric Dane’s Wife Revealed Two Early Signs of ALS Before His Diagnosis

Fans around the world were saddened by the loss of actor Eric Dane, best known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria. Dane passed away on February 19, 2026, at the age of 53 after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurological disease that affects nerve cells responsible for muscle movement.

In the months leading up to his diagnosis, his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, reportedly noticed subtle changes in his health that later turned out to be early warning signs of the disease.

The First Sign: Weakness in His Hand

According to accounts shared after his diagnosis, one of the earliest symptoms Dane experienced was weakness in his hand. At first, it seemed minor and easy to dismiss.

The actor himself initially believed the problem might have been caused by overuse or fatigue, such as spending too much time using his phone or typing. However, the weakness gradually became more noticeable over time.

Muscle weakness in the hands or arms is one of the most common early signs of ALS, as the disease damages the motor neurons that control voluntary muscle movement.

The Second Sign: Difficulty With Coordination

Another change that concerned his family involved problems with coordination and muscle control. Tasks that had once been easy began to feel more difficult.

ALS affects the communication between the brain and muscles. As the disease progresses, people may experience increasing difficulty with movement, speech, and other basic functions.

These early symptoms can sometimes appear subtle, which is why many people initially attribute them to stress, aging, or minor injuries.

When the Diagnosis Was Confirmed

After the symptoms continued to worsen, Dane sought medical advice and eventually received the diagnosis of ALS in April 2025.

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, gradually destroys nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. This leads to progressive muscle weakness, loss of mobility, and eventually difficulty breathing.

Currently, there is no cure for the condition, though treatments may help manage symptoms and slow progression.

Raising Awareness About ALS

After publicly revealing his diagnosis, Dane spoke openly about his experience and used his platform to raise awareness about ALS.

Even while dealing with the challenges of the illness, he continued acting and advocating for more research and support for those living with the disease.

His story has also helped highlight how small, early symptoms—like slight muscle weakness—can sometimes signal serious neurological conditions.

Remembering Eric Dane

Eric Dane was widely admired for his television roles, especially his portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan (“McSteamy”) on Grey’s Anatomy. Over the years, he built a devoted fan base and remained active in Hollywood.

Following his passing, tributes from fans, colleagues, and friends poured in, remembering not only his talent but also his courage in speaking openly about ALS and the impact it had on his life and family.

His story continues to raise awareness about ALS and the importance of recognizing early symptoms of the disease.
