Stories: Was someone in the room?

Right after our wedding, my husband and I collapsed into the hotel room, still in our fancy clothes and completely exhausted.

The whole day had been a blur—ceremony, photos, speeches, dancing, relatives I hadn’t seen in years. By the time we finally closed the door behind us, my feet hurt, my head was spinning, and the idea of doing anything romantic sounded impossible.

“It’s our first night as a married couple,” I said apologetically.

He smiled and kissed my forehead. “We’ve got the rest of our lives.”

Within minutes, we were asleep.

I don’t know how long I’d been out when something woke me.

At first, I thought I was dreaming.

The bed was shaking.

Not gently either—like someone was pushing it from underneath.

My eyes flew open.

The room was dark except for the faint light coming through the curtains. I held my breath and listened.

The bed shook again.

I turned slowly toward my husband.

For a split second, panic ran through me. Was there an earthquake? Was someone in the room?

Then I saw him.

He was kneeling beside the bed, half asleep, bracing one hand against the mattress and the other against the headboard.

“Mark?” I whispered.

He jumped like he’d been caught stealing cookies.

“Oh!” he said, blinking in confusion. “You’re awake.”

“Why is the bed shaking?” I asked.

He looked embarrassed, rubbing the back of his neck.

“I thought you were having a nightmare,” he admitted.

“What?”

“You were breathing really fast and mumbling in your sleep. I didn’t want to wake you suddenly, so I was… trying to gently shake the bed.”

I stared at him for a moment, processing.

“You thought… rocking the entire bed was the gentle option?”

He shrugged sheepishly. “I panicked.”

The seriousness of the moment collapsed instantly.

I burst out laughing.

Soon he was laughing too, still kneeling awkwardly beside the bed.

“You know,” I said between laughs, “most husbands would just wake their wife.”

“Yeah,” he said. “But I didn’t want our first night to start with you thinking I scared you.”

I reached down and pulled him back into the bed.

“You’re ridiculous,” I said, smiling.

“Married to you now,” he replied proudly.

We eventually fell back asleep, the room finally still again.

It wasn’t the romantic movie-style wedding night people imagine.

But lying there next to a man who would rather awkwardly shake an entire bed than risk upsetting me…

I realized something important.

I hadn’t just married someone who loved me.

I’d married someone who cared about my peace—even in the middle of the night.
